Dressings

Dressing a wound properly with the right type and size of wound dressing is the single most important part of the wound healing process. A dressing can have a number of purposes, depending on the type, severity and position of the wound, although all purposes are focused towards promoting recovery and preventing further harm from the wound. A dressing is designed to be in direct contact with the wound, but may also be classified as the material that holds another dressing in place (primary and secondary dressing). Dressings come in different forms so it is best for the user to know the nature of the wound they are treating and consult a doctor about the best product and methods to use.

Various types of dressings can be used for different healing purposes: • Controlling the moisture content • Protecting the wound from infection • Removing slough and exudate • Maintaining the optimum pH and temperature to encourage healing
